The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in a raid detained two siblings along with 10 gold bars weighing 1.2 kilograms at Benapole in Jashore on Thursday morning.
The detainees were identified as Milon Hossain, 28, and Hiron Mia, 25, sons of Shafiqul Islam of Munshipur village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga.
Jashore BGB-49 commander Lieutenant Colonel Shahed Minhaj Siddiqui said after being informed that a large amount of gold would be smuggled to India through the Benapole border, BGB conducted a drive at the check post area. At one stage, they stopped two people on suspicion and found ten gold bars hidden in their waist belts.
The estimated market value of the gold is around Tk 96 lakh.
The arrestees will be handed over to the Benapole Port Police Station after filing of a case under the Gold Smuggling Act, he said.
