Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked businessmen to place Bangladesh and countrymen before profits.
She said, “There is no Hawa Bhaban and Development Wing at PMO to share your profits with.”
Sheikh Hasina called upon businessmen to do business thinking about their country and its people as the world is going through a crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the Covid-19 pandemic.
She was speaking at a meeting with importers and exporters of consumer goods at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital on Wednesday, reports UNB and BSS.
Hasina said that in the last 14 years, during the Awami League government, businessmen of the country ran their businesses and made profits without hindrance.
She said, “You’re now thinking about profit. Earlier (during the BNP-Jamaat regime), a big portion of the profit had become hollow as a certain percentage of that had to be given to Hawa Bhaban and the development wing of the Prime Minister’s Office. ---all has now become free from it. Keep that in mind, (do business) thinking (welfare) of the country and its people.”
Sheikh Hasina observed that in the past, the lion's share of profits went to Hawa Bhaban and PMO’s Development Wing.
The Prime Minister also said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government provided stimulus packages to businessmen to run their businesses smoothly, even though they did not ask for that.
She said that a team was formed through her initiative, and it operated well in running the wheels of the economy.
Hasina recalled that during the pandemic, many factories and industries in developed countries closed down.
“We said that we will not allow our factories and industries to close down, we have to continue… I ensured workers’ wages, and gave the stimulus package,” she added.
