Speakers emphasized the need for early identification of fistula patients and bringing them under free treatment facilities to relieve them from various complications, including pain, fever, tenderness, and itching, reports BSS.
They on Monday noted that fistulas can develop between the rectum and the vagina or between the intestine and the skin. These occur when inflammation-related sores worsen, creating a tunnel within the internal tissues.
The speakers made these remarks while addressing an orientation on obstetric fistula patient identification at the conference room of Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex this noon.
The Upazila Health and Family Planning Department organized the event with technical support from UNFPA Bangladesh under the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula project, implemented by LAMB, aiming to eradicate obstetric fistula from the upazila.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Rafiquzzaman Rafiq attended the function as the chief guest, while Deputy Director of the Department of Family Planning Tariqul Islam spoke as the special guest. Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Md. Masudar Rahman presided over the ceremony.
In his speech, the civil surgeon stressed the importance of conducting awareness campaigns to identify fistula patients.
"If the staff of the health department and LAMB Hospital work together, it will be possible to declare Gobindaganj upazila free from fistula," he added.
Tariqul Islam identified informal delivery practices as one of the major causes of fistula.
Field Officer of UNFPA Dr. Md. Shahin stated that efforts to make Gobindaganj upazila fistula-free have already begun.
"The initiative will gradually be expanded to six other upazilas in the district," he added.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Md. Masudar Rahman, in his concluding speech, urged concerned staff to be more vigilant and punctual in identifying fistula patients at the field level and providing necessary guidance.
Earlier, a PowerPoint presentation on fistula disease, its symptoms, and necessary interventions was presented by Dr. Fahmida Shireen Neela, Gynecology Consultant of the upazila health complex.
In her presentation, she emphasized that fistula is a curable disease if identified early and treated in a timely manner.
A number of health and family planning staff from the upazila, the monitoring and documentation coordinator of LAMB Hospital, other hospital staff, invited guests, and journalists participated in the event.
