If you often skip brushing your teeth before bed, you might be putting more than just your oral health at risk. In a March 24 video on Instagram, Indian gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi explained how neglecting nighttime brushing could also impact your heart health.
The link between oral and heart health
Dr. Sethi highlighted that research suggests poor oral hygiene is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and heart failure. “If you don’t brush your teeth before sleep, you may be at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease,” he said, urging people to maintain proper oral care.
Why brushing before bed matters
Dr. Sethi outlined three key reasons why brushing at night is crucial:
Bacteria entering the bloodstream: Harmful bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation that may impact heart health over time.
Increased risk of cardiovascular problems: Gum disease, often caused by poor oral hygiene, has been linked to a higher risk of heart-related issues.
Healthier hearts for regular brushers: Studies indicate that people who brush their teeth consistently and get routine dental cleanings have a lower risk of heart disease.
Dr. Sethi emphasized that brushing your teeth every night is a simple yet effective way to protect your heart and overall health.
