Russia is prepared to facilitate negotiations between the US and Iran, including discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program and regional proxy network, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Bloomberg on Tuesday, citing Bloomberg the RT reported this on Tuesday.
According to the news agency, former US President Donald Trump expressed interest in talks with Iran during a February phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and through representatives at a high-level US-Russian meeting in Riyadh days later.
“Russia believes the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations,” Peskov said, adding that Moscow is “ready to do everything in its power” to support the process.
Last month, Trump revived his "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran, imposing fresh sanctions just weeks after Moscow and Tehran signed a landmark strategic partnership agreement. His executive order aims to curb Iran’s nuclear program, restrict its missile development, and weaken its regional proxies.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has defended its military buildup, citing regular threats from Israel. Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei recently condemned Western criticism of Iran’s defenses, calling it “outrageous and irrational” while accusing Israel of “aggression and lawlessness.”
A day earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar warned that military action should remain an option to prevent Iran from weaponizing its nuclear program.
While Trump has pushed for tougher sanctions, he has also signaled interest in securing a “verified nuclear peace agreement” with Tehran. However, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has dismissed the prospect, pointing to Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the previous nuclear deal.
