President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s unwavering commitment to national security, stating that the Turkish military could strike terrorist targets "suddenly, one night."
Speaking at a press conference following a cabinet meeting on Monday, Erdogan emphasized that Turkiye has repeatedly demonstrated its determination to safeguard its survival and security. He drew on the famous line from a classic Turkish song, "I can come suddenly one night," a slogan Erdogan has adopted for rapid counterterrorism operations targeting the PKK and its Syrian affiliate, the YPG. He added that pressure was mounting on these terrorist groups.
Erdogan also highlighted a new phase in Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad's regime, reaffirming Turkiye’s stance for a unified Syria. "We cannot accept under any pretext that Syria be divided," he said, stressing Turkiye’s readiness to take necessary actions to prevent any risks of fragmentation. He reiterated that Turkiye "has the means" to act decisively against any threats.
Turkiye also remains committed to countering the PKK/YPG, which enjoys U.S. support in the form of military aid and training. Erdogan emphasized that the terrorist group must either "bury their arms" or be "buried" themselves, signaling the country’s readiness for further military action if the PKK/YPG does not disband.
Over the past decade, Turkiye has renewed its counterterrorism efforts, launching several operations against PKK terrorists in Iraq and Syria. The Claw Sword operation, launched in 2022, continues to target PKK strongholds in northern Iraq. Other operations such as Euphrates Shield (2017), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019) have further weakened the terrorist group and aimed to secure border areas.
Erdogan also reaffirmed Turkiye’s steadfast support for Palestine, particularly in light of the ongoing Gaza conflict. He thanked the Turkish people for their solidarity, referencing the large Gaza rally in Istanbul and stating that Turkiye’s efforts would continue until peace in Gaza is achieved. Turkiye’s long-term goal, Erdogan said, is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In his remarks, Erdogan called on the international community to support Palestinians, expressing hope for peace in the new year and reaffirming Turkiye's commitment to opening avenues for lasting peace in Gaza.
