US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a call today with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to discuss the ongoing developments in Syria. Blinken emphasized the importance of a peaceful transition of power in Syria through an inclusive, Syrian-led process, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
Blinken also highlighted the continuation of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS mission in Syria, stressing the need to protect civilians, particularly vulnerable groups, and maintain the safety of civilian infrastructure. He reiterated the necessity for all parties involved to respect human rights and uphold international humanitarian law in the conflict-ridden country.
The conversation also included condolences from Blinken for the Turkish soldiers who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Isparta, Turkey.
Earlier, Minister Fidan addressed the potential return of millions of displaced Syrians, following opposition factions' declaration of the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
