South Korea has indicated a major step regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. It has been reported that South Korea has hinted at supplying weapons to Ukraine for its war against Russia. Yoon Suk Yeol, the South Korean President, has made this indication after the news of North Korean troops being deployed in Russia.
According to President Yoon, North Korea's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict poses a threat to South Korea, as its troops are gaining direct combat experience on the battlefield, something they have lacked until now. In exchange, Moscow is reportedly providing sensitive military technology to North Korea.
Although South Korea can export arms if the government wants to, it has long adhered to a policy of not supplying weapons to countries involved in conflicts.
So why is South Korea changing its mind?
President Yoon explained that the decision now depends on North Korea's level of involvement in the war.
"Based on how deeply North Korea engages in this conflict, we will gradually adjust our support and strategy for Ukraine. This means we are not ruling out the possibility of providing arms," he said.
South Korean president also stated that he had talked about the North Korea issue with Donald Trump.
Depending on the situation, the matter will be discussed in the near future.
North Korea has become extremely vocal about the Ukraine war and it has become an important ally of Russia. South Korea and Western nations have long accused Pyongyang of supplying Moscow with artillery shells and missiles for use in Ukraine.
Recently, intelligence agencies from Seoul, Washington, and the Western military alliance NATO have revealed that North Korea has sent almost 10,000 troops to Russia. President Yoon stated that his administration would continue to monitor the presence of North Korean troops in Russia, and based on the situation, it would make a decision regarding the supply of arms to Ukraine.
