Six unprofitable and inactive land ports of the Bangladesh Land Port Authority under the ministry of Shipping have been recommended to be closed initially, reports Banglanews24.com.
The committee formed by the ministry to review the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of eight land ports of the port authority has made this recommendation.
The committee on Monday presented their observation and recommendations to Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, the adviser of Shipping and Labour & Employment ministries. Committee made the recommendations after inspecting sites physically and holding meetings with the stakeholders.
The shipping adviser said while addressing the meeting held at the conference room of the ministry: “During the previous government’s tenure, many unnecessary infrastructures were established.”
“The establishments have not brought any benefit to the state, rather wasting of state money,” he continued.
He shared how the previous government wastes public money, saying: “Two land ports have also been built in a relatively short distance in the same upazila.”
“All the land ports that will be beneficial for the development of the people of the country will be kept operational,” he assured.
The ports that were recommended to close are Chilhati Land Port in Nilphamari district, Daulatganj Land Port in Chuadanga district, Tegamug Land Port in Rangamati district, Birol Land Port in Dinajpur district, Koraitoli Land Port in Mymensingh district, and Balla Land Port in Habiganj district.
The committee recommended closing these land ports due to a lack of economic activities, and no establishments were developed on the Indian side of these ports.
Senior Secretary to the Shipping Ministry and the committee members were present at the meeting.
