The annual diesel sales volume of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) declined by 14 percent or 690,000 tonnes to 4.2 million tonnes in fiscal 2023-24 when compared to the previous year, according to sources at the BPC.
In FY22, the BPC achieved its highest-ever diesel sales, reaching 4.9 million tonnes.
The BPC, a state-owned agency, ensures the supply of energy needed for agricultural production, industrial processes, power generation, transportation, households, and other activities.
In FY24, the BPC sold 6.7 million tonnes of various petroleum products. That year, the corporation sold 955,000 tonnes of furnace oil, 430,000 tonnes of petrol, 387,000 tonnes of octane, 541,000 tonnes of jet fuel, 69,870 tonnes of kerosene, 47,650 tonnes of bitumen, 15,890 tonnes of lube oil, 27,560 tonnes of marine fuel, 11,580 tonnes of LPG, 10,260 tonnes of JBO, 124 tonnes of grease, 4,680 tonnes of SBP, 3,470 tonnes of MTT, and 411 tonnes of LOD.
The volume of various fuel products sold in FY23 by the BPC was 7.3 million tonnes in FY23. The corporation sold 6.8 million tonnes of fuel oil in FY22, while the volumes were 6.2 million tonnes in FY21 and 5.5 million tonnes in FY20.
BPC Director Anupam Barua said that the import of fuel oil is normal compared to market demand.
Fuel oil users noted that diesel is the most widely used fuel in the country for agricultural production, industrial processes, power generation, and transportation. However, in recent times, the output from power plants has significantly decreased, resulting in numerous industrial closures and a drop in vehicle usage, leading to reduced diesel sales.
