OpenAI announced on Monday that it will begin testing ads on ChatGPT for some users in the United States, reports BBC.
The trial will affect free users and subscribers to ChatGPT Go, a new lower-cost tier priced at $8 per month. OpenAI said the ads will appear after prompts, such as holiday suggestions, and will not alter the AI’s responses.
The company emphasized that user conversations will not be shared with advertisers. Ads are being tested to allow more people to access ChatGPT with fewer usage limits.
Experts say the move is part of OpenAI’s strategy to generate revenue, as the company has not yet turned a profit despite having 800 million users, only 5% of whom are paid subscribers. ChatGPT also offers Plus and Pro tiers, costing $20 and $200 per month in the U.S.
ChatGPT Go was first launched in India in 2025 before expanding globally. OpenAI, which began as a non-profit, has increasingly shifted toward commercial operations in recent years.
