South Korea will pursue favourable terms in negotiations with the United States over tariffs on imported memory chips, a presidential office spokesperson said at a televised briefing on Sunday, reports Reuters.
The spokesperson said Seoul and Washington last year released a joint fact sheet on their trade agreement that included provisions ensuring South Korea would not receive unfavourable treatment under U.S. tariffs compared with key competitors. The comments were made in response to questions about a proclamation by the Trump administration imposing tariffs on artificial intelligence chips.
On Saturday, South Korea’s trade minister said U.S. tariffs on some advanced computing chips were expected to have a limited impact on South Korean companies.
Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) are among the world’s largest producers of memory chips and key exporters to the United States.
