Meta said on Monday it would acquire Chinese artificial intelligence startup Manus, as the technology giant accelerates efforts to integrate advanced AI capabilities across its platforms, reports Reuters.
Technology companies including Meta have been stepping up investments in artificial intelligence through strategic acquisitions and high-profile talent hires amid intensifying competition. Earlier this year, the Facebook owner invested in data-labeling firm Scale AI in a deal valuing the startup at $29 billion, bringing its 28-year-old chief executive, Alexandr Wang, into the company.
Financial terms of Meta’s acquisition of Manus were not disclosed.
Manus, which is based in Singapore, develops a general-purpose AI agent designed to function as a digital employee, capable of independently carrying out tasks such as research and automation with minimal prompts.
Meta said it plans to operate and commercialize the Manus service and integrate the technology into its consumer and business products, including Meta AI.
Earlier this year, Manus launched its AI agent, claiming its performance surpasses that of OpenAI’s DeepResearch agent. The company, part of Beijing-based Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co, has promoted its product by completing dozens of tasks for users on the social media platform X at no cost.
Manus is among a growing number of Chinese technology firms that have relocated or domiciled in Singapore in recent years, betting that a presence in the trade-focused city-state will reduce the risk of operational disruption amid rising Sino-U.S. geopolitical tensions.
