Meta Platforms has launched a new AI-powered standalone app aimed at competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, blending artificial intelligence capabilities with the company’s social media roots. Powered by Meta’s Llama 4 language model, the app includes a “Discover” feed showcasing how users interact with AI, along with a voice mode for natural interaction.
The app lets users connect their Facebook and Instagram accounts to instantly personalize their experience, giving Meta a strategic edge in integrating AI with social data. Forrester’s research director Mike Proulx noted that the app’s Discover feed is reminiscent of the original Facebook Feed, but focused entirely on AI usage.
Meta’s open-source approach continues with Llama 4, part of the company’s broader vision of making AI tools accessible to developers and users alike. Meta reports that more than one billion people are already using its AI products each month.
The announcement came during Meta’s first-ever developer conference, LlamaCon, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella held an in-depth conversation about the current state and future of artificial intelligence.
Zuckerberg acknowledged the AI hype, but stressed the need for real productivity gains that translate to economic growth. “If this is going to lead to massive increases in productivity, that needs to be reflected in major increases in GDP,” he said, adding that such transformation could take many years.
Nadella compared AI’s potential to the invention of electricity, noting that it took 50 years for industry to fully adapt to that breakthrough. He emphasized the need for both software development and management shifts to unlock AI’s real value.
Zuckerberg responded with cautious optimism: “We’re all investing as if it’s not going to take 50 years, so I hope it doesn’t take 50 years.”
With its AI app and expanding Llama ecosystem, Meta continues to position itself as a leader in AI innovation—blending open-source development, social connectivity, and strategic industry conversations to shape the next phase of intelligent technology.
