Earlier in the first innings, South Africa posted 357 runs in 50 overs by losing 4 wickets.
Top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen smashed 133 runs off 118 and opener Quinton de Kock scored 114 runs off 116 balls.
New Zealand pacer Tim Southee bagged 2 wickets while Trent Boult and James Neesham got one wicket each.
