The Thanksgiving weekend saw a box office boom, led by the record-breaking success of 'Moana 2', which earned $221 million domestically over five days, surpassing the previous Thanksgiving record set by Frozen 2 in 2019.
The film also earned $165.3 million internationally, bringing its global total to $386 million, marking the second-largest opening of the year. 'Moana 2', initially planned as a Disney+ series, was released in theaters under CEO Bob Iger, with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles.
Meanwhile, Wicked earned $117.5 million over the weekend, pushing its global total to $359.2 million, while Gladiator II brought in $44 million.
The weekend’s combined ticket sales totaled $420 million, breaking Thanksgiving records and signaling a potential rebound for the movie industry post-pandemic. With upcoming films like Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the holiday season is expected to maintain strong box office performance.
