The United States has welcomed South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s decision to rescind the declaration of emergency martial law, a move made after the National Assembly’s unanimous rejection of the measure.
In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Tuesday (Washington time) stated, “We continue to expect political disagreements to be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law.” He reaffirmed Washington’s support for South Korea’s democratic processes and the enduring U.S.-ROK alliance based on shared principles of democracy and governance under the law.
The declaration of martial law had raised significant domestic and international concern, underscoring tensions within South Korea’s political landscape. The swift and unanimous response by the National Assembly is seen as a strong affirmation of constitutional checks and balances.
President Yoon’s decision to comply with the Assembly’s vote aligns with democratic principles and avoids escalating tensions. The United States has reiterated its expectation for political disputes to be resolved through dialogue and legal mechanisms, emphasizing its partnership with Seoul as critical to regional stability.
This development highlights South Korea’s institutional resilience, reinforcing its commitment to upholding democratic norms amid political challenges. The U.S.-ROK alliance, anchored in shared values, remains a key pillar of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
