Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday said the current government has taken office under a heavy debt burden of Tk 30 lakh crore, attributing it to corruption and mismanagement during the previous regime.
Speaking at the District Commissioner (DC) Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, he described the country’s economic condition as one of the most fragile in its history.
Tarique Rahman also pointed to weakened public administration, deteriorating law and order, and ineffective institutions, including the judiciary, Election Commission and Anti-Corruption Commission.
He added that the global war situation has further complicated the challenges, but assured that the government is working to manage the crisis without increasing public suffering.
Tarique Rahman further said that the February 12 election proved that if public administration works properly, it reflects the public opinion correctly.
At the time, the Prime Minister considered every post in public administration important and urged them to prepare themselves to work in any post. He also announced that vacant posts in public administration would be filled with transparency and speed.
He said, "Ensuring the security of every citizen of the state, regardless of party affiliation, is one of the goals of this government. In the meantime, by identifying various sectors, the government has started working to create employment in the country and abroad."
Regarding the July Charter, he said, "This government is determined to implement each point of the election manifesto and the signed July Charter in stages."
