The Directorate of Environment (DOE) on Saturday urged all concerned to refrain from using single-use plastic and polythene during Eid journeys by launch.
Passengers were also requested to dispose of food and other waste in bins provided on the launch decks instead of throwing them into the river, reports BSS.
Additionally, the DOE’s mobile court instructed launch supervisors and staff to take necessary measures to enforce these guidelines.
A mobile court, led by an executive magistrate from the DOE's monitoring and enforcement wing, conducted an extensive drive at Sadarghat Launch Terminal from 9pm to midnight on Friday.
With assistance from River Police, the magistrate inspected launches to assess their overall condition, particularly regarding plastic, polythene, and waste management. Launch authorities were directed to install waste bins, while River Police personnel were asked to monitor compliance. Announcements were made via loudspeakers to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of plastic and polythene misuse.
In a separate operation, the DOE disconnected the electricity supply of a small waste battery factory in the Konabari area and sealed the facility.
The DOE confirmed that such enforcement drives will continue.
