The prosecution has found evidence that former Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Barishal Range, Alep Uddin, forcibly broke the fast of a detainee’s wife and raped her while keeping her husband in illegal confinement.
Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, disclosed this information to journalists on Thursday.
On the same day, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Director General of NTMC Ziaul Ahsan, and six other police officials were presented before the tribunal in connection with a case involving mass killings and crimes against humanity during July-August. Former Superintendent of Police Mohiuddin Farooqi and former Additional Superintendent of Police Alep Uddin were also brought before the court. The tribunal ordered the investigation into the eight police officials to be completed by April 28, while the investigation into Alep Uddin and Mohiuddin Farooqi’s case must be completed by May 28
Following the hearing, Tazul Islam said, “The case against the police officers was the first on the tribunal’s cause list today. There was an order to present 23 accused individuals, including the former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Among them, eight arrested individuals were presented before the tribunal. The prosecution requested permission to interrogate Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, which the court granted for February 23. The investigation against the eight police officers must be completed within two months, and the next hearing is scheduled for April 28. The cases of Alep Uddin and Mohiuddin Farooqi must be investigated by May 28.”
Regarding Mohiuddin Farooqi, Tazul Islam stated, “He was involved in the enforced disappearances of numerous individuals. He detained victims in his office and the torture cell of ‘Aynaghar,’ where they were subjected to extreme and inhumane torture. He was a mastermind in carrying out such brutal acts.”
About Alep Uddin, he said, “The allegations against him are the most severe. He was involved in the abduction and torture of many individuals. Today, many people are standing behind us who were abducted and forcibly disappeared by Alep Uddin and kept in confinement for years. He used methods such as electric shocks, blindfolding, hanging victims upside down, and electrocuting them. His most heinous crime was abducting an individual and, during the detention, forcing the victim’s wife to break her fast during Ramadan by threatening to kill her husband and then raping her. The prosecution has gathered evidence of this crime. Investigating such cruel and heinous offenders will take time.”
Alep Uddin was working in the special branch of the police before the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. Previously, he had served in RAB's intelligence division and RAB-11.
