The government has issued an ordinance to appoint judges to the High Court (HC) through an independent Supreme Judicial Appointment Council, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Tuesday.
The government, at the same time, also undertook a decision to establish a separate judicial secretariat and introduce permanent attorney services, said the law adviser while addressing a press conference at his secretariat office in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Citing the Supreme Court Judges Appointment Ordinance 2025, he said that the six-member council would be formed with two Appellate Division judges (one retired and one serving), two HC Division judges and the attorney general headed by the chief justice.
The council will collect the names of aspirants voluntarily, allowing individuals to submit their own names or propose others.
After verifying their credentials, the council will invite the candidates for interviews, said the law adviser.
The next appointment of judges to the High Court will be carried out following the proper process established by the council, Asif Nazrul expressed his optimism.
Referring to the atrocities committed by the ousted Sheikh Hasina-led government, Asif Nazrul said, “The High Court was the major platform used by the previous government to carry out its misdeeds, oppression and human rights violations.”
People were denied justice as the defeated government has appointed incapable judges to the higher court on political consideration, he alleged.
The issue of human rights of the country’s 17 crore people will remain at risk if no prudent and impartial judges are recruited in the HC through a transparent manner, said the adviser.
