Jatiya Party leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) Golam Faruk Ovi was acquitted in the murder case of model Syeda Tania Mahbub Tinni.
Dhaka's Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Mst. Shahinur Akhter announced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the case records, model Tinni's body was found on November 10 night in 2002, next to pillar number 11 of China Friendship Bridge number 1 on Buriganga River in Keraniganj. The next day, the then Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Keraniganj Police Station Md. Safi Uddin filed a case against an unknown accused.
The first investigation officer in the case was the then sub-inspector (SI) of that police station Md. Qayyum Ali Sardar. After that, when the photo of the body of the deceased Tinni was published in the newspaper, a relative of the deceased named Sujan identified it. Later, the case was handed over to the CID as a sensational case on November 24 in 2002. The then CID inspector Fazlur Rahman was given the responsibility of investigating the case.
After that, CID inspector Sujaul Haque, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Golam Mostafa, ASP Arman Ali, ASP Kamal Krishna Bharadwaj and ASP Mozammel Haque were given the responsibility of investigating the case. The last investigating officer, Mozammel Haque, submitted the charge sheet to the court.
41 people were made witnesses in the charge sheet of the Tinni murder case. In addition, 22 pieces of evidence were seized in this regard.
Although former Jatiya Party MP Golam Faruk Ovi was initially accused in the investigation, the police could not arrest him. In Ovi’s absence, on July 14, 2010, the seventh additional district and sessions judge of Dhaka framed charges against Ovi in the case related to Tinni's murder and disappearance of the body.
