Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali said many lives could have been saved during the mass uprising if the police had made the right decisions.
He on Saturday made the statement while addressing the annual meeting of Bangladesh Retired Police Officers Welfare Association at Bangladesh Police Auditorium, Rajarbag.
He said: “If the police had made the right decisions 72 hours before August 5, many lives including those of policemen, could have been saved.”
The commissioner said: “Barrister or doctorate degrees have no value to policemen if they are not applied in their work for the force.”
He said that the police associations failed to play a proper role during the July mass uprising, a lesson that should be considered for the future.
He feels ashamed and traumatized with police’s role during the uprising, he said: “I still feel ashamed to introduce myself as a police officer.”
However, he called police officers to restore the lost image through service, saying: “The police must restore their image lost during the July-August uprising, through dedicated service.”
