Immigration police detained former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Lt Gen (Retd) Mainul Islam at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while leaving the country for Canada on Tuesday evening.
An official from the Immigration Police confirmed the matter.
A total of 74 people including 57 army officials were brutally killed at Pilkahana in Dhaka during the BDR mutiny on February 25, 2009. Just 48 hours after the mutiny, the then-government appointed Mainul Islam as the director general of the BGB. He served as the BDR DG from February 28, 2009 to May 9, 2010.
After Mainul Islam took over the charge of the DG, the uniform of the BGB was changed and an intelligence unit was introduced to the force. Then, he was promoted to the post of Lieutenant General and made General Staff at the Army Headquarters.
In July 2015, Mainul Islam was made Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. In February of the following year, he went on retirement from the Army.
