Terming the existing wage board formed for the country’s journalists as faulty, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said the wage board system should be abolished and a minimum wage structure should be introduced in media.
“Wage board system is faulty. A new structure should be launched so that no one can recruit journalists under that basic salary. This law of minimum salary will have to be imposed strictly. If any media organization recruits journalists out of this law, that media must be banned. The list of all underground media should be published. Journalists get less salary for these (underground media).”
He came up with the observation while speaking at a discussion for democratic reformation in the capital on Sunday.
The press secretary said content protection must be for news. Copyright protection is mandatory for original content creators. Journalism is not cheap.
Shafiqul Alam also said a powerful trade union for journalists is needed. The interim government has been trying to reform for the independence of all unions. Next government can try to stop this. All should be aware of that.
He emphasized stopping the repetition of failures of mass media after identifying these.
