Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Md Nahid Islam said there is no pressure on the media from the government and the media should use this freedom to provide objective news with courage.
He said this in a view exchange meeting with the editors of daily newspapers at the conference room of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday.
Emphasizing on the free flow of information, Adviser Nahid said that people are constantly being misled by rumors and misinformation as correct information is not disseminated widely. The media has to play a leading role in preventing rumors and misinformation.
Mentioning the role of media in the anti-discrimination movement, he said that the story of those who were martyred and injured in the students' uprising and their sacrifices should be disseminated in the media. The media has to play a responsible role to keep the martyrs and injured in the movement in public memory.
Criticizing the previous fascist government, advisor Nahid said that at that time, many media workers could not reveal the truth due to fear. Now that time has passed.
The adviser called on journalists to publicize information about the disappearances, corruption, and other misdeeds of the fascist government.
Welcoming the constructive criticism of the media, he said that the current interim government believes in the freedom of the media. Government expects media to play an effective role in reaching people with correct information.
Regarding media reform, Nahid Islam said that the government has already formed a commission to reform the media. The media will be reformed based on the report of the commission.
