Police have arrested three women in connection with the murder of 8-year-old Muntaha Akhter Jerin in Sylhet. The individuals taken into custody are Shamima Begum Marzia, a neighbor of the victim, along with her mother Alifjan Begum and grandmother Kutubjan Begum. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
Earlier on Sunday, November 10, at approximately 4 a.m., the body of 8-year-old Muntaha Akhter Jerin was found in a canal near her home, after being discarded in a nearby pond. Authorities reported that a rope was found tied around her neck at the time of discovery.
Kanaighat Police Station OC Abdul Awal confirmed the details, saying, "Around 3 a.m., a woman attempted to remove the body from a canal near Muntaha's house. The body was likely being moved to be discarded in a pond. Locals witnessed the situation, as we had previously instructed some people in the area to remain on alert. Acting on this, the community members were vigilant. The police have arrested three individuals on suspicion of their involvement in the incident, and they are currently being interrogated."
On the morning of November 3, Muntaha Akhter Jerin returned home with her father after attending a local prayer meeting. Later that afternoon, she went outside to play with other children near her house. However, when she did not return home by evening, her family began searching for her but was unable to locate her.
Following Muntaha’s disappearance, many individuals both locally and internationally took to social media platforms like Facebook, appealing for information about her whereabouts. In a bid to aid in the search, the family offered a reward of 1 lakh taka for anyone who could help find her. Additionally, numerous others pledged various rewards for the person who would locate the missing child.
