A 29-year-old Japanese man was detained by Thai police on Thursday for his suspected involvement in online frauds in Myanmar. He was arrested at Bangkok’s airport after arriving on a flight from Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, according to Thai authorities and other sources.
The man, who is also wanted in Japan for separate cases, is expected to be deported back to Japan for further investigation. He is believed to have been part of a Chinese-led crime ring operating in Myanmar’s eastern Kayin state, near the Thai border.
Thai police suspect his involvement in a case where a Japanese high school student, tricked by an online acquaintance made through a game, traveled to Thailand and was taken to a crime base in Myanmar in January. The student has since been placed under protection.
