A single Colombo variety lemon weighing nearly 800 grams is being sold for Tk200, while a set of four costs Tk800. Known for its rich fragrance and large size, the eye-catching fruit has drawn significant attention from buyers.
The lemons were seen being sold on Tuesday in Shaifullakandi Union of Banchharampur Upazila.
Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, school teacher Abdullah Al Mamun has been selling the Colombo variety lemons. However, he has produced a larger yield of the China Bari-3 variety compared to Colombo lemons.
The highly aromatic giant lemons, each weighing between 750 and 850 grams, have attracted buyers and wholesalers from distant areas. Due to the high price, many customers are choosing to buy a single lemon for Tk 200 instead of purchasing a full set.
More than just a local figure in Banchharampur, Abdullah Al Mamun has become well known across Brahmanbaria for his modern and profitable farming initiatives. He established a lemon orchard spanning seven bighas of land in Bhelanagar village under Shaifullakandi Union.
A primary school teacher with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Mamun cultivates around 50 varieties of fruits and vegetables alongside lemons, including bottle gourd, beans, eggplant, bananas, malta, taro, China oranges, and bitter gourds.
After covering expenses, he reportedly earns nearly Tk100,000 per month from his agricultural ventures. According to local sources, Mamun initially inherited two bighas of land, where he used to cultivate Boro rice annually before expanding into commercial farming.
