Apple is preparing to allow voice-controlled artificial intelligence apps from other companies to operate on its CarPlay system, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter, reports Reuters.
The move represents a strategic shift for Apple, which has until now restricted CarPlay voice control to its own Siri assistant. With the change, users will, for the first time, be able to interact with AI chatbots from third-party providers through the vehicle interface, the report said.
Apple declined to comment on the report.
AI companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet’s Google would be able to release CarPlay versions of their apps that include voice-control functionality, according to Bloomberg.
However, Apple will not allow users to replace the Siri button on CarPlay or change the wake word used to summon Siri. Users will need to open the third-party app to activate its voice-control mode.
The iPhone maker is reportedly working to support these apps in CarPlay within the coming month, allowing developers to design their apps so that voice mode launches automatically upon opening, the report added.
