WhatsApp is developing a new “thinking mode” for Meta AI aimed at delivering deeper, more accurate and better-structured answers, according to insights from the latest Android beta update released through the Google Play Beta programme.
Although the feature is not yet available to users, references uncovered in the beta version suggest Meta is laying the groundwork for a major upgrade to WhatsApp’s built-in AI assistant.
Meta AI was initially designed to answer questions and assist with everyday tasks, but its functionality has remained relatively basic compared with other AI assistants. The upcoming update signals a shift toward more advanced reasoning capabilities.
Developers analyzing the beta identified a new interaction system built around two distinct modes: fast mode and thinking mode.
Thinking mode is designed for scenarios where accuracy and depth are prioritised over speed. When enabled, Meta AI will take additional time to process prompts, analyse context and reason through complex questions before responding with more detailed answers.
Fast mode, expected to remain the default setting, focuses on quick responses to simple queries, offering brief replies with minimal delay.
WhatsApp is also developing an interface toggle to switch between the two modes within the Meta AI chat. A thunder icon is expected to indicate fast mode, while a light bulb icon will represent thinking mode.
Once launched, thinking mode is expected to transform Meta AI from a basic chatbot into a more capable and context-aware digital assistant.
