Under pouring rain at the Kings Arena, the four-time champions Bashundhara Kings produced a ruthless second-half display to dismantle Brothers Union 4-0 on Tuesday, storming into the Federation Cup final.
Despite a spirited first-half resistance from the Gopibagh outfit on a sodden pitch, the Kings' undeniable class ultimately prevailed.
The hosts required just three minutes to break the deadlock when Saad Uddin drove down the right flank, teeing up Rakib Hossain to rifle a brilliant angled strike into the back of the net.
Speaking after the match, the forward revealed the astute observation behind his tight-angled finish. "My focus is always on contributing to the team, especially in a vital match like today's," Rakib explained. "We prepared thoroughly and practised hard to secure this win. When the opportunity presented itself, I noticed their goalkeeper had stepped away from his near post, anticipating a cross. He left a gap, so I took the shot, and thankfully, it went in."
Acknowledging the treacherous conditions, Rakib noted the physical toll the weather took on the fixture. "It is undoubtedly tough playing on a muddy pitch; it increases the risk of injuries and causes numerous problems. However, the lads played exceptionally well, which allowed us to secure a comfortable victory despite the conditions."
Brothers did have their chances to restore parity early on.
Nigerian midfielder Samuel Ononiwu squandered a golden header in the 13th minute, whilst Pakistani winger Shayek Dost and Samuel Chigozie also tested Kings' keeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon.
At the other end, Brothers' goalkeeper Ishaque Akando temporarily kept his side in the tie, denying Dorielton Gomes on multiple occasions before the interval, including a spectacular bicycle kick ruled out for offside.
Following a bright restart from Brothers that ultimately lacked an end product, the Kings shifted through the gears and regained their rhythm.
The tie was effectively settled in the 71st minute when Dorielton met another Saad cross to effortlessly slot past a static Ishaque.
Three minutes later, the Brazilian talisman bagged his brace, taking his tournament tally to nine by calmly rounding the keeper following a sublime ball from Emon Shahriar.
With two minutes of normal time remaining, Sabbir Hossain added the final flourish, wrapping up a commanding 4-0 victory that firmly underlines Kings' credentials.
The dominant performance keeps Kings firmly on course for a domestic sweep, a target that remains the ultimate focus for the dressing room.
"Bashundhara always steps onto the pitch to be champions," Rakib stated, outlining the club's ambition. "We have already secured one trophy this season. Now we are top of the league and in the final of the Federation Cup. If we can lift these two trophies, it will secure the treble. We have achieved a treble before, and everyone the club, the officials, and we the players is completely united in our determination to win it again."
In Tuesday’s other fixture, an elimination match at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited swept aside Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
The triumph propels the Black and Whites into the second qualifying match, where they will face Brothers, the defeated side from the first qualifier, with a coveted spot in the final at stake.
Mohammedan last reached the Federation Cup showpiece in 2023, where they famously ended a 14-year trophy drought by defeating Abahani Ltd on penalties in a dramatic final at the very same Cumilla venue.
