State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a cricket stadium at Purbachal Cricket Stadium, promising swift and structured action to bring the long-delayed project back on track, reports Daily Sun.
Speaking on Saturday after visiting the site, the former footballer acknowledged concerns over the deteriorating condition of the ground, following questions from journalists about years of inactivity and repeated changes in direction.
“The land allocated for the Purbachal Cricket Stadium remains intact. Insha’Allah, a cricket stadium will definitely be built here,” the State Minister said. “Alongside this, we also plan to develop multipurpose facilities so that various sports can benefit from the venue.”
Aminul said that high-level discussions have already taken place involving the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and senior government officials to assess the overall progress and future roadmap.
“We have sat together with the cricket board president, the secretary of the ministry and other senior officials. They have briefed us on the entire matter,” he said.
“We are hopeful that Bangladesh will co-host the Asia Cup in 2027 and the Cricket World Cup in 2031. Keeping those events in mind, we expect the cricket board to initiate work in the first phase,” he added.
The State Minister added that the government is keen to avoid further controversy surrounding the project.
“Our goal is to move forward in a planned and organized way so that no more drama is created over this issue,” he noted.
“After resolving all outstanding matters, we want to formally take the necessary steps from the government’s side very quickly, Insha’Allah, to ensure a cricket stadium at Purbachal, along with multipurpose sports facilities,” Aminul concluded.
