Arsenal’s hopes of ending a six-year trophy drought were dashed in the FA Cup final as Manchester City triumphed 2-0, securing their first title of the season.
The Gunners, aiming for their first major silverware since 2020, were stunned by a quick-fire brace from City in the second half. The first goal resulted from a mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and the second came just minutes later, sealing a dominant victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.
City controlled the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Nico O'Reilly scoring both goals. City had 63% possession and 10 shots, two of which were on target. Arsenal, despite creating several chances, could only muster three shots on target from seven attempts.
City had been reeling from disappointment prior to the match, having been eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid and stumbling in recent Premier League fixtures. However, their FA Cup performance was a display of resilience, a stark contrast to their earlier setbacks.
Arsenal started strong, creating three excellent chances, but City’s goalkeeper James Trafford kept them at bay. Kai Havertz’s shot was blocked, and Bukayo Saka saw two attempts thwarted. Despite early pressure, City struggled to challenge Arsenal’s defense, managing just two off-target shots before halftime.
The second half saw City step up their intensity. Arsenal’s defense was put under pressure, and in the 60th minute, Kepa made a costly error, allowing O'Reilly to head in the loose ball for the opener. Just four minutes later, O'Reilly doubled his tally, heading home a cross from Matheus Nunes.
Arsenal responded with desperation, as Ricardo Calafiori’s shot hit the post and Gabriel Jesus' header struck the crossbar, but it was not enough. Arsenal's dreams of lifting the FA Cup since 2020 were shattered, while Guardiola made history by becoming the first manager to win the competition five times.
