Former Germany World Cup winner Mesut Ozil arrived in Bangladesh on Wednesday to spearhead a high-profile humanitarian mission, placing Rohingya welfare at the heart of his visit, reports Daily Sun.
Ozil is in Dhaka to promote Turkey-backed development work and to stand in solidarity with Rohingya refugees ahead of the start of Ramadan.
He attended the inauguration of the TIKA initiative at University of Dhaka, aimed at upgrading healthcare services at the Shaheed Mortuza Medical Centre.
The visit has drawn global attention to Turkey’s humanitarian footprint in Bangladesh.
On 19 February, Ozil will travel to Cox’s Bazar with Bilal Erdogan, son of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Hosted by the Bangladesh authorities and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, the delegation will share Iftar with refugees and visit Turkish-supported schools.
Ozil is also expected to thank Bangladesh for sheltering the Rohingya for nearly a decade.
