England Test captain Ben Stokes has undergone successful surgery after suffering a broken cheek while coaching at Durham’s academy.
The 34-year-old was injured last week while working with young players at his county. It is understood he was struck in the face by a ball hit by a batter as he stood beside the practice nets.
Stokes shared a photograph from hospital on Instagram on Tuesday showing visible swelling to his face, writing: “May not look like it but the surgery was a success.”
There is no confirmed timeline for his return to competitive cricket. However, Stokes is expected to join the England Lions coaching staff for their development series against Pakistan Shaheens in the United Arab Emirates next month.
England’s next Test assignment begins on June 4 with the first of a three-match series against New Zealand.
Stokes has not played since the conclusion of the Ashes in Sydney on January 8. He suffered an adductor injury on the penultimate day of the series, which England lost 4-1, prompting criticism over the team’s performances, preparation and culture.
