Bangladesh sealed a thrilling nine-run victory over Ireland Women to complete a flawless group stage in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier on Sunday, reports Daily Sun.
The emphatic win ensured Bangladesh finished as undefeated group champions, winning all four of their matches to book a confident place in the Super Six stage.
Batting first after winning the toss at the Malpani Cricket Ground, the Tigresses posted a competitive 153 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Opener Dilara Akter led the charge with a fluent 35 off 27 balls, while Juairiya Ferdous added 11 from 10 deliveries in a brief opening stand. The innings was anchored by Sharmin Akhter Supta, who played a commanding knock of 52 off 45 balls, striking a well-paced half-century when her side needed stability.
Captain Nigar Sultana Joty chipped in with 13, while Sobhana Mostary provided 30 off 16 balls. For Ireland, Arlene Kelly and Jane Maguire claimed two wickets each.
In reply, Ireland made a solid start, with Amy Hunter scoring 35 off 25 balls. The chase was then driven by Gaby Lewis, who produced a superb 73 off 58 balls, keeping Ireland in contention deep into the innings.
However, regular breakthroughs stalled the Irish momentum. Orla Prendergast managed 12, while Laura Delany was run out for a crucial dismissal at 117.
Shorna Akter starred with the ball, picking up two wickets, while Rabeya Khan chipped in with one, including the prized scalp of Lewis. Bangladesh’s bowlers held their nerve at the death, restricting Ireland to 144 for 8.
Supta was named the player of the match for the second time in this tournament.
