International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah is set to meet officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday in a bid to resolve the growing uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, amid Dhaka’s reluctance to travel to India.
According to the NDTV reports from India, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has gradually evolved into a sensitive and complex standoff. In its first formal communication to the ICC, the BCB sought a change of venue for its World Cup matches, expressing a preference for them to be moved out of India, with Sri Lanka cited as a possible alternative host.
However, the issue has since moved beyond logistical concerns. According to reports, the BCB has conveyed to the ICC that national sentiment and dignity have also been affected, a development widely linked to the controversy surrounding Mustafizur Rahman’s abrupt exit from the Indian Premier League (IPL). As a result, Bangladesh’s position has hardened.
The BCB has reportedly demanded comprehensive, man-to-man security for every member of its World Cup contingent should participation in India be unavoidable. The request includes players, coaching staff, support personnel, and board officials, underscoring the seriousness of Bangladesh’s concerns.
The underlying message, according to observers, is clear: the matter is no longer solely about security arrangements, but also about respect and assurance at an institutional level. This has placed the ICC, and Jay Shah in particular, in a delicate position as the governing body seeks to balance the interests of a major host nation with the concerns of a participating member board.
