Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni says eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi will decide for himself whether he wants to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
Messi recently renewed his contract with Inter Miami, while it is still unclear whether he will attempt to win another trophy with Argentina.
Asked about the possibility of Messi playing again in the World Cup, Scaloni said it will be in the player's own hands.
"I met with Messi, I'm very close to his house. We'll see about the World Cup later, we talked about many things but not about this part because there's still time. We shouldn't tire him, let him be calm and he'll decide."
"Then we will see what is best based on this decision. We talked about other things, not whether he will be at the World Cup or not."
"Those of us who know him understand that he will never be calm. He is born a competitor, he wants to win, he wants to play, he always has to be there. This is very important, especially for his teammates, who see the captain behave like that and always want to play for the national team."
Meanwhile, Argentina is one of the main favorites to win the World Cup, alongside France, Brazil, Spain and England.
