Despite continuing to play regularly in domestic leagues, Shafiul Islam has been away from the national team for a long time. Once a symbol of reliability for Bangladesh, the pacer has now brought his cricketing journey to an end.
On Sunday night, Shafiul announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket through a Facebook post. In his message, the former national team fast bowler wrote, “Assalamu Alaikum. Today I am taking the toughest decision of my career. I, Shafiul Islam, hereby announce my retirement from all forms of professional cricket. Wearing the red and green jersey of Bangladesh has been the greatest honor of my life.”
He expressed gratitude to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), teammates, coaches, and countless fans and well-wishers for their support throughout his career, saying their prayers and love made his journey possible.
Shafiul began his professional career in 2007 with a List A match. He played his last international game in March 2020, a T20I against Zimbabwe. The 36-year-old featured in 91 international matches for Bangladesh, claiming a total of 107 wickets.
