Former national team footballer Golam Dastagir Nira has passed away after suffering a heart attack. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
He breathed his last on Saturday night at the age of 61.
Nira played for top local clubs Abahani and Brothers Union and was a dependable defender for the national team.
He represented Bangladesh in several tournaments, including the President Gold Cup.
After retiring from playing, he turned to coaching and worked for several years as a coach of Muktijoddha in the Premier League. In recent years, he had been quietly involved in grassroots football development in his home district of Khulna.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) and members of the football community have expressed deep sorrow at his death.
