Bhutan left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey made history by becoming the first bowler to take eight wickets in a Twenty20 international match, reports AFP.
Yeshey, 22, recorded figures of 8-7 in his four overs during the third men’s T20 international against Myanmar. Bhutan posted 127-9, and Myanmar were bowled out for just 45.
This performance surpassed previous T20I bests held by Syazrul Idrus (7-8 for Malaysia against China in 2023) and Ali Dawood (7-19 for Bahrain against Bhutan earlier this year).
Yeshey made his T20I debut in 2022 against Malaysia with figures of 3-16 and has since taken 37 wickets in 34 matches.
No bowler has achieved an eight-wicket haul in domestic or franchise T20 cricket. Notable seven-wicket performances include Colin Ackermann’s 7-18 for Leicestershire Foxes against Birmingham Bears in England’s T20 Blast (2019) and Taskin Ahmed’s 7-19 for Durbar Rajshahi against Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League (2025).
In women’s T20 internationals, the best bowling figures remain 7-0, achieved by Indonesia’s Rohmalia against Mongolia in 2024.
