Devon Conway brought up his second Test double-century early on the second morning of the third Test against the West Indies at Mount Maunganui on Friday, reports AFP.
The 34-year-old left-hander reached the milestone by cutting seamer Jayden Seales through point for four, getting to 200 off 316 balls with 28 boundaries.
New Zealand were firmly in control at 372 for 2 midway through the morning session on day two, with Conway well set and Kane Williamson at the crease on seven.
Resuming the day on 178, Conway began positively, driving Anderson Phillip through the covers for four to underline his intent.
His double-century followed a dominant opening partnership with Tom Latham, as the pair added 323 runs — New Zealand’s second-highest opening stand in Test history. Latham was eventually dismissed for 137 late on day one.
Conway said earlier that he continues to draw inspiration from his idol, former South Africa opener Neil McKenzie. “You never have enough,” McKenzie once told him — advice Conway said has shaped his approach to batting long and making big contributions.
Conway previously scored a double-century on his Test debut against England at Lord’s in 2021 and will now have his sights set on surpassing McKenzie’s highest Test score of 226.
The highest individual score in New Zealand Test cricket remains Brendon McCullum’s 302 against India at the Basin Reserve in 2014.
