Bashundhara Kings earned a convincing 2-0 victory over defending champions Mohammedan Sporting Club in a heated Bangladesh Football League match at the Kings Arena on Friday, reports the Daily Sun.
The win served as payback for last season, when Mohammedan defeated Kings both home and away. This time, Mario Gomez’s side controlled the contest from start to finish, extended their unbeaten run in the league, and strengthened their position at the top of the table.
Mohammedan created the first major chance in the 13th minute. Mahabub Alam’s cross broke the offside trap and fell to Samuel Boateng, but the forward could not control the ball before it reached goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico.
Two minutes later, Kings struck with precision. Faisal Ahmed Fahim delivered a long cross from the left edge near the corner flag. The ball dipped perfectly for Rakib Hossain, who finished with a low right footed shot to give Kings the lead. Soon after, Fahim’s corner found Emmanuel Tony, whose header rattled the top net.
Kings came close again in the 20th minute. Emmanuel Sunday outplayed a defender with clever footwork and fired a sharp angled shot. The ball slipped through Sujon Hossain’s gloves but bounced off the crossbar. Mohammedan had a golden chance in the 33rd minute when Mahabub’s low cross reached Boateng, but he failed to make contact with the ball. Before halftime, Zico also denied Rahim Uddin’s weak flick from a corner. In added time, a miscommunication at the back almost punished Kings when Zico struggled to control Tanvir Hossain’s pass, but Mohammedan could not take advantage.
The second half resumed with Kings searching for their second goal. In the 62nd minute, Sohel Rana received a pass from Dorielton and attempted a volley that missed the far post. Minutes later, Mahabub struck a powerful effort over the bar, while goalkeeper Sujon blocked another attempt from Shahriar Imon.
Substitute Cuba Mitchell almost scored in the 74th minute. A clever buildup from Sunday and Dorielton set up the young midfielder, but his strike missed the post by a narrow margin.
Kings finally doubled their lead in the first minute of added time. A long through pass found Brazilian forward Dorielton, who beat captain Mehedi Hasan Mithu and then rounded goalkeeper Sujon before placing the ball into the net with composure.
Kings now have 16 points from six matches with five wins and one draw. Mohammedan remain in fourth place with seven points.
In the day’s other matches, bottom placed Arambagh KS stunned Brothers Union with a 2 0 victory. Mohammad Shawon opened the scoring before Kazi Rahad doubled the lead in first half added time. In Munshiganj, Fortis FC earned a 1 0 win against Rahmatganj Muslim Friends and Society.
