Australia is set to unveil a new Test venue when Bangladesh tour for a two-match series in August 2026, with Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena emerging as the frontrunner, reports the Daily Sun.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has publicly indicated the venue’s strong position, though Cricket Australia is yet to finalise the schedule.
The tour will mark Bangladesh’s first Test appearance in Australia since 2003, when Darwin and Cairns hosted the two-match series that ended in a 2–0 victory for the hosts. More than two decades later, both Cairns and Darwin remain in the mix, alongside Townsville, as Cricket Australia considers taking top-level cricket back to regional centres.
Cricket Northern Territory chief executive Gavin Dovey said he remains cautiously optimistic about Darwin’s chances, given its history of hosting the Tigers in 2003 and its readiness to stage elite cricket. The northern venues have long been viewed as suitable for early-season fixtures, with August conditions offering warm, dry weather ideal for long-form cricket.
The 2026–27 home summer will be unusually tight, with Australia scheduled to play only four Test matches. The season will conclude with the 150th anniversary Test against England at the MCG—an historic fixture commemorating the first Test played in 1877. The reduced calendar means the Gabba is set to miss out on hosting a Test match for the first time since the 1976–77 season, a significant break from tradition for a venue long regarded as Australia’s preferred season opener.
With Mackay pushing strongly, regional venues vying for consideration, and Bangladesh returning after 23 years, Cricket Australia is expected to use the series to broaden its Test footprint. A final decision on match locations is anticipated in the coming months.
