A few months before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the discovery of more than 400 bags containing human remains was confirmed near Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico, one of the main venues for the international tournament. The episode is not isolated: since 2022, search organizations have reported constant discoveries of human remains in the area, revealing the depth of the crisis of violence and disappearances affecting Jalisco.
According to the Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco collective, led by José Raúl Servín García, at least 456 bags with human remains have been found in the area surrounding the stadium alone. The latest excavations, carried out in September 2025 together with relatives of the disappeared and local authorities, once again exposed the magnitude of the problem. The region, far from stabilizing, shows that the clandestine graves have remained active for years.
A few kilometers from Chivas's stadium, in a local cemetery, more than 130 bodies were also found, while areas such as Nextipac, Plan de la Noria, and Arroyo Hondo have accumulated dozens of additional discoveries between 2018 and 2022. The geography of horror completely surrounds one of the venues that Mexico intends to showcase to the international community.
However, the Mexican government insists on downplaying the situation. Claudia Sheinbaum claims that the country is in a position to guarantee the security of the World Cup, even though Zapopan residents themselves warn that authorities are speeding up or closing investigations so that during the event "everything appears normal." The concern is not minor: the evidence indicates that the clandestine graves remain active and that the forensic crisis is far from being solved.
The contrast between the festive image of the tournament and Mexican reality is increasingly evident. While the stadiums are being renovated and promoted as showcases for the country, just a few meters away, excavation work is being carried out by families searching for their disappeared loved ones in the face of state inaction. The case of Jalisco not only reflects a structural security failure: it exposes the Mexican government's inability to confront the territorial advance of drug trafficking and protect its own population.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Akron Stadium keeps its status as an official venue. Four World Cup matches will be played there, including group stage and play-off games. FIFA's and the Mexican government's decision to move forward without resolving the crisis generates outrage among the groups demanding concrete answers.
Mexico will try to present itself as stable to the world, but the numbers speak for themselves: hundreds of bags with human remains around a World Cup stadium are a brutal reminder of the reality that Mexican leadership can't—or doesn't want to—face.
