On Wednesday, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Faruque Ahmed announced that he will meet with Najmul Hossain to discuss his decision to step down from the captaincy after the home series against South Africa.
Faruque will travel to Chattogram on Wednesday to attend the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and South Africa. During his visit, he intends to meet with Najmul to understand his concerns.
Reports have indicated that Najmul is reluctant to continue as captain after the second Test against South Africa and has communicated his decision to the board, pending further discussions with Faruque.
“I’m not sure if Najmul has spoken with you all... Sometimes, news on social media can impact players. They need to be aware of this. If a player has concerns, it’s best to communicate through proper channels, whether it’s cricket operations, the CEO, or the president,” Najmul stated.
“I hope players will be mindful of this. If anyone feels they can’t continue, that’s a personal matter. We’ll discuss any requests that come our way,” he added.
Faruque highlighted the importance of understanding the underlying reasons behind a player’s decision.
He said, “The easiest option is for someone to simply say, ‘I don’t want to do it, thank you,’ and walk away. But it’s crucial to dig deeper to understand their reasons. We need to have those conversations.”.
Since taking on his role, Faruque acknowledged that he has had limited opportunities to meet with players..
“We’ve been busy managing various issues, including forming BPL teams. I only managed to sit down with a few players once, and that was solely about the BPL. I’ll be going to Chattogram tonight to meet with the team, the coach, and everyone involved. I hope for a positive outcome,” he expressed.
“I can’t understand the situation without talking to him directly. Decisions shouldn’t be made based on newspaper reports. Meeting with Najmul will help clarify whether there’s an issue or if he truly doesn’t want to continue,” he said.
“At this moment, I haven’t had any direct conversation with him,” Faruque concluded
