The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has obtained information on 244 flats, 20 plots, and 79 apartments owned by politicians abroad.
It uncovered details of these assets during investigations carried out over the past year.
A source linked to the Anti-Corruption Commission said that during the period, assets worth 360 crore taka (Deed Value)—allegedly amassed through illegal means—have been seized.
Sources said that the ACC officials found those flats and plots in various countries and cities, including London, Dubai, Singapore, and Malaysia. Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs) and leaders at various levels of the ousted Sheikh Hasina led government amassed these assets in these countries and cities.
According to the ACC data, in 2024, 91 orders were issued for seizure and freezing of assets. Of these, 281.17 acres of land worth 63 crore 29 lakh 27 thousand 92 taka are in the country.
“There are 84 houses or buildings that have been sized, worth 65 crore 80 lakh 33 thousand 847 taka,” the data reads.
“80 flats worth 22 crore 35 lakh 38 thousand 270 taka, 16 plots worth 2 crore 27 lakh 67 thousand 837 taka and 1 agro farm worth 1 crore 40 lakh 54 thousand 491 taka have also been seized.”
“In addition, 8 cars worth 81 lakh 40 thousand taka, 1 resort worth 78 lakh 50 thousand taka, 11 shops and commercial spaces worth 3 crore 97 lakh 24 thousand 292 taka, 1 office space worth 37 lakh 29 thousand taka, 6 commercial spaces worth 6 crore 86 lakh 75 thousand taka and 1 commercial space worth 2 crore 52 lakh 81 thousand 204 taka were seized,” according to the data obtained from ACC.
“The deed value of these assets seized in 69 documents is about 170 crore 55 lakh 32 thousand 33 taka.”
“Meanwhile, 140 crore 41 lakh 85 thousand 745 taka in 550 bank accounts has been freeze in 38 documents. In addition, 44 crore 65 lakh 25 thousand 394 taka in 19 BO accounts, 30 savings certificates worth 4 crore 83 lakh taka and 3 crore 78 lakh 66 thousand 517 shares of 42 companies have been blocked,” the documents continued.
However, excluding the company shares, a total of 190 crore 90 lakh 11 thousand 140 taka was blocked.
ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Md Akhtarul Islam told Bangladesh Pratidin, "The assets were seized through the court after we obtained initial evidence of their illegal acquisition during the investigation process."
After the fall of the Awami League government, facing the student-public movement, several government agencies started investigating the corrupt. These agencies include Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police. Cases are being filed in various incidents based on the investigation report.
It is known that more than 18 thousand bank accounts have been summoned from BFIU until last January. Of these, 378 bank accounts have been seized. The amount of money and other assets seized from these accounts is about Tk 16,000 crore.
These accounts include ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, various personal accounts related to S Alam Group, various personal accounts related to Nasa Group, various personal accounts of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, and former food minister Kamrul Islam.
The BSEC has seized 6 thousand and 800 crore taka worth of shares of Salman F Rahman in Beximco Group.
More than 8 thousand crore taka worth of shares of various companies of the S Alam Group have been seized. Later, when a case was filed, the court ordered the seizure of shares worth about 3 thousand 500 crore taka in that group.
In addition, shares of Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed worth about 2 thousand crore taka have been seized.
