Actress Mehazabien Chowdhury has apologized after being criticized for placing poster of her movie over the graffiti of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a student from Comilla Victoria Government College and a theater activist who was killed eight years ago.She has removed the ‘Priyo Maloti’movie poster from the graffiti.
On Wednesday, Mehazabien attended a movie promotion event at the TSC area of Dhaka University (DU), accompanied by the film's team.
A video shared on social media showed Mehazabien covering Tonu's graffiti with a poster. She later took the poster down on her own hands.
Facing criticism over the incident, Mehazabien wrote on her verified Facebook page at night, “Our team went to TSC today (December 18) for the promotion of the film 'Priyo Maloti'. Many joined us in promoting the film, and due to the heavy rush, the campaign had to end quickly. A poster was placed over the graffiti of the late Sohagi Jahan Tonu by mistake and unintentional misplacement. We all know Tonu's tragedy and the fight for justice for her murder is still going on.''
She added, “What happened regarding the postering was a completely unintentional mistake. We immediately removed the posters and observed a minute's silence. We hope you will forgive our unintentional mismanagement.”
Tonu was killed on March 20, 2016. Mehazabien wrote, "The core purpose of our film, ourselves, and our efforts is to fight for justice. It comes from the heart. We hope you will forgive our unintentional mistake. Thank you for all your support."
The script and screenplay of the film ‘Priyo Maloti’, inspired by a true story, were written by Shankha Dasgupta. Mehazabien Chowdhury stars in the lead role, and the film is scheduled for release on December 20.
