The High Commission of India in Dhaka paid tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, recalling his role in Bangladesh’s Liberation War and reaffirming India’s commitment to the enduring friendship between the two neighbouring countries.
In a Facebook post marking Ziaur Rahman’s death anniversary, the High Commission remembered him as one of Bangladesh’s bravest sons and highlighted his historic radio address in March 1971.
“As the people of Bangladesh gather today in memory of one of their nation’s bravest sons – Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam – we recall his famous radio address of March 1971, which electrified the masses, inspired them on a path of resistance against oppression and led to national liberation,” the post said.
The High Commission noted that Ziaur Rahman’s address played a significant role in mobilising the people of Bangladesh during the struggle for independence.
The High Commission also stressed the longstanding ties between Bangladesh and India, rooted in shared sacrifices and common aspirations.
“Today, as then, India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh in a saga of shared sacrifices and a common journey towards progress and prosperity of both our peoples,” the post added.
The message came as people across Bangladesh observed the death anniversary of former president and sector commander Ziaur Rahman, paying tribute to his contributions to the country's independence and nation-building.
